Why you want one when piecing quilts, AND how to achieve a nice 1/4″ seam allowance! Quilters of every skill level need a nice 1/4″ seam allowance, in this video I show you how.
1/4″ Seam Allowance
By testing and proving my seam allowance, I have improved accuracy in my quilts. This also reduces frustration at the sewing machine, which is always a WIN!
If you are a quilter, I hope you will take a few minutes to watch the video and add to the conversation. Tell me what you learned, or what you do to ensure your 1/4″ seam allowance. There’s always more to learn, and I love learning from all of you too!

I’ve committed myself to sharing weekly videos, starting with all the basics! I would love for you to pop over and leave a comment on the video, and subscribe to my channel while you are there. In your comment, let me know what you would like to see in a video tutorial.
Are already using this technique? I’d love for you to share the video with a friend that is new to quilting, or on your Pinterest boards. As a more experienced quilter we forget all the basics that we’ve learned along the way, and can easily gloss over them when speaking with a new quilter.
This is great information, Amy. I struggle with the while “scant” quarter by thing, myself. I just finished a quilt that each block ended up being bigger because my scant 1/4″ was too small, so many of my points got lost when I tried to square up my blocks to the correct dimensions. I will try moving my needle over a bit when I start my next project and see if that does the trick. Thanks!
That’s frustrating – sorry Tracy! I think the key is to measure the results, just test it on scraps before you start a new project.
I’ve done the same where I thought I needed to be more scant, and my segment was too big in the block!
Good luck & let me know how it goes!
Thank you for sharing. As a new quilter it was helpful to understand the importance of the seam allowance.
